Since the rosters by themselves are little more than a bunch of numbers and letters, I have put up this photo page to give some idea of just what sort of locomotives the Norfolk Southern operated. I have indicated the size of the photos; while some of them are rather large, I don't think that they are too unwieldy. I am willing to make them smaller if I get enough complaints. Many thanks to Warren Calloway for the scans; unless otherwise noted, the photos are from his collection.
Norfolk Southern 1605 (98K) leads a trio of AS-416s in their original red. This is a later version of the red scheme, with the "tarwheel" logo on the cab sides, and the numbers displaced to below the cab. The cab end of a Baldwin switcher is visible to the right.
Norfolk Southern 1608 (81K) is an AS-416 painted in the later gray scheme, introduced with the delivery of the GP18s in 1963.
Norfolk Southern 1615 (32K) is another AS-416 in gray. Note the differences from 1608, including the red stripes on the headlight casing, and the raised hatch behind the exhaust stack, typical of late Baldwins.
Norfolk Southern 1617 (124K) is the last AS-416 built, and is coupled to the only other high-hood AS-416. 1617 is almost in its as-delivered appearance, the only difference being the black paint on the curve where the roof meets the hood end. This area was originally painted red. Note the difference in height between the two high-hoods and the earlier Baldwins behind them.
This photo shows Norfolk Southern GP18 5 (31K) at the head of a mixed train.
Norfolk Southern 2002 (41K) is the road's second GP38. The thin gray stripe on the numberboard is a carryover of the paint scheme on the GP18s, matching the height of the numberboard on that model. The red paint on 1612 shows that the NS was in no hurry to repaint its older locomotives into the new scheme.
Norfolk Southern 2003 (155K) is from the second GP38 delivery. The numberboard is all black, simplifying the paint scheme.
This overhead shot shows Norfolk Southern 2006 (54K) leading a GP18 and several other GP38s.
Norfolk Southern 2007 (113K) is the last locomotive delivered to the NS. The numberboards have the later-style numbers, which some earlier GP38s also received. This photo shows the additional jacking pads near the stepwells, as well as the poling pockets common to all NS locomotives. NS GP38s also had an unusual engineer's-side step on the battery box, instead of the typical grab iron.
Durham and Southern DRS 4-4-1500 365 is former Norfolk Southern DRS 6-4-1500 1508, retrucked when it went to D&S. The lower radiator mounting distinguished the 1500 horsepower DRS from the later AS-416s on the NS. From what I've heard, the NS was most likely glad to see it go. Warren Calloway now has a page with more photos of NS locomotives (and some freight cars and cabooses).
