This page is a list of the locomotives operated by the "old" Norfolk Southern Railway. The NS Ry. was created on January 1, 1942, as a reorganization of the Norfolk Southern Railroad, which had been in receivership since 1932. The steam list does not include those locomotives retired by the NS Railroad before 1942. The diesel list includes all diesels purchased by the NS Ry. before its merger into the Southern Railway in 1974, but does not include those locomotives purchased by Southern and assigned to NS ownership after the merger.
